Dodge only builds three vehicles at this point, one of them being the big, burly Challenger two-door. Retro styling makes it one of the better-looking vehicles on sale, especially with the enormous tires and fender flares that come with the Challenger Widebody. Dodge introduced the Challenger way back in 2008 and gave the muscle car a major refresh for 2015; changes for 2022 are limited to a new alarm system. The Challenger competes with other American performance coupes like the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro as well as foreign competitors like the Nissan Z.

The Challenger excels as a big-bodied old-school muscle coupe with a distinctly different attitude than its cross-town competitors from Ford and Chevrolet. This is a larger, heavier car than a Mustang or Camaro, but that pays off with an enormous trunk and reasonable passenger space. The Challenger isn't as capable on a track as those two (unless it's a drag strip), but a quiet, comfortable cabin and smooth ride make Dodge's muscle car a great grand tourer.

Plus, the Challenger's plentiful V-8 offerings all provide a deep snarl, oodles of low-end torque, and a near-bottomless supply of smiles for the driver. The Challenger is also the only car in its segment to offer AWD, even if it's only available with the V-6. For what it's worth, Dodge also delivers an interior with high-quality materials for the segment, and the Stellantis Uconnect infotainment system is intuitive. And let's not forget, you can get a 717-hp Challenger Hellcat with a manual!

Dodge will give you almost anything you want under the hood of a Challenger, as long as it has six or eight cylinders. Most models are RWD only, with the exception of the six-cylinder Challenger SXT and GT. Transmissions on offer include a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic.

The Challenger earns a five-star overall safety score based on its performance in NHTSA safety testing . Unfortunately, the big coupe fails to impress in IIHS testing . The 2021 model received a Marginal score in the driver's side small overlap front crash test , plus Acceptable ratings for roof strength and head restraints and seats. It earned Good ratings in the moderate overlap front crash test and side crash test.

Adding the Technology package nets adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and rain-sensing wipers. Opt for the Driver Convenience package if you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

The Challenger is a larger coupe than any of its competitors, and that's obvious when you look at the numbers. Compared to the Ford Mustang, the Challenger has significantly more trunk space and rear legroom.

Lower-spec Challengers work with a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display, but R/T Scat Pack variants and above get an 8.4-inch system that's optional on the SXT, GT, and R/T. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included on all trims, and navigation is available. The Challenger SXT, GT, and R/T get a six-speaker audio setup while a premium six-speaker Alpine system is included on higher trims and optional on lower ones. Nine-speaker Alpine and 18-speaker Harman Kardon systems are also optional.

There are three players in the modern muscle car game: the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, and Ford Mustang. Each offers a monstrously powerful supercharged V-8. Chevy's Camaro ZL1 delivers 650 hp and the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 develops 760 hp, but neither can top the pavement-punishing 797 hp routed through the Challenger Hellcat Redeye 's rear wheels.

Our pick would be the Challenger R/T Scat Pack. Muscle cars like the Challenger are best with V-8s, and the Scat Pack's 485-hp V-8 feels like the sweet spot of this engine lineup. It'll happily break traction any time you get eager with the throttle, and to our ears, it sounds better than the more powerful Hellcat engines.
